How any crew could work 8-9 hours clearing, benching, and dressing new trail and still have the legs to teach Army Corps of Engineers the boot dance is beyond me.
Even more mysterious is how a scope of trail work developed to give 10-12 Americorps NCCC team members a solid eight weeks of work is completed in under 6 weeks, by eight young adults and a couple of volunteer days.
Maple 1, the Americorps NCCC team that anchored Illinois Trail Corps at Lake Shelbyville, left for their next assignment (cooking food for summer campers in western Michigan) on August 6. Their gift to the Shelbyville area is a repaired, rebuilt & reblazed Chief Illini Trail, 11 miles of hiking as challenging as Illinois offers...
